Online or in the same room?

Telehealth means a visit by video, by phone or through an online exchange.

Think about where you can speak freely and ask questions. For an online visit, have your questions and medicine list nearby.

The Federation of State Medical Boards recommends the same standard of care for online visits and visits in the same room.

These are suggested rules for state medical boards. As checked in September 2026, each state’s own rules determine what is required there.

An intake form is the start of a discussion

A form with fixed answers is not enough on its own. The medical-boards group says this in guidance checked in September 2026.

A form that allows more questions can be part of care if the person assessing you can gather enough information.

The group’s guidance checked in September 2026 also says patients must have a way to ask follow-up questions of their own.

Ask how any needed tests would happen

Medical-board guidance calls for needed tests to be completed or arranged, or for referral to another health professional.

If checking the health problem needs a physical examination or a procedure, the guidance calls for arranging care in person.

Ask which tests are proposed, why each is useful, who reviews the results and who bills for them. Ask which checks are needed before treatment can be considered and which belong to later care.

Leave with a plan you can describe

Ask for the reason for treatment, the intended change and the next point when the plan will be reviewed. Get a phone number or another way to reach the person who answers questions.

Before agreeing to a refill plan, ask how to pause it or end care. Write down any question that still lacks an answer.
